Example of a Sustainability Consultant Job Description

INTRODUCTION:

  • Company overview: Founding vision, current state of affairs, size, relevant stats. 
  • Role mission: Goals, team, and resources to make it happen. 

 RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Develop and implement sustainability strategies that align with client goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments and sustainability audits to identify areas for improvement.
  • Provide recommendations for reducing carbon footprints, improving energy efficiency, and implementing renewable energy solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainable practices into business operations.
  • Monitor and report on sustainability performance, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and frameworks
  • Engage with stakeholders to promote sustainability initiatives and communicate progress effectively.
  •  Prepare detailed reports and presentations on sustainability metrics and project outcomes.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with environmental management systems (EMS) and sustainability frameworks.
  • Knowledge of carbon footprint analysis and greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting.
  • Familiarity with sustainable supply chain management practices.
  • Strong understanding of renewable energy solutions and energy efficiency strategies.
  • Experience in conducting sustainability audits and developing action plans.
  • Proficiency in sustainability reporting standards (e.g., GRI, CDP).
  • Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and communication around sustainability initiatives.

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in sustainability consulting or a similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability frameworks and standards (e.g., LEED, ISO 14001).
  • Proven experience in conducting sustainability assessments and developing strategic plans.
  • Ability to analyze complex data sets and provide actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for engaging with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Project management experience with the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in relevant software tools (e.g., life cycle analysis software, energy modeling tools).
