Example of a Building Services Engineer Job Description

INTRODUCTION:

  • Company overview: Founding vision, current state of affairs, size, relevant stats. 
  • Role mission: Goals, team, and resources to make it happen. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and oversee the design of building services systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems, ensuring compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Manage the installation and commissioning of building services systems, coordinating with contractors, vendors, and project teams to ensure timely and successful project completion.
  • Analyze and assess building systems for efficiency and performance, implementing improvements and upgrades to optimize energy use and operational effectiveness.
  • Ensure all building services systems meet relevant codes, standards, and regulations, and maintain high-quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide technical support for troubleshooting and resolving issues related to building services systems, and oversee maintenance and repair activities.
  • Prepare detailed documentation, including technical specifications, project reports, and maintenance records, to support effective project management and client communication.
  • Implement sustainable building practices and energy-efficient solutions to minimize environmental impact and promote green building initiatives.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3-4 years of experience in building services engineering, with a proven track record of designing, installing, and managing building systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; relevant certifications such as Chartered Engineer (CEng) or similar are highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection, as well as knowledge of relevant codes and standards.
  • Proficiency with design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and building energy modeling tools.

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with project management methodologies, such as Agile or PRINCE2.
  • Experience with green building standards and sustainability practices, such as LEED or BREEAM.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess system performance data and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively with project teams.
  • Knowledge of industry-specific regulations and standards related to building services engineering.
  • Experience with emerging technologies and innovations in building systems, including smart building solutions and energy management systems.
