Example of a Marine Engineer Job Description

INTRODUCTION:

  • Company overview: Founding vision, current state of affairs, size, relevant stats. 
  • Role mission: Goals, team, and resources to make it happen. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, develop, and maintain marine vessels and their components, including engines, propulsion systems, and structural elements.
  • Conduct inspections and tests on marine equipment to ensure compliance with safety regulations and performance standards.
  • Collaborate with naval architects and other engineers to optimize vessel design for efficiency, stability, and safety.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in marine systems, providing solutions for repairs, upgrades, or replacements.
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of new marine systems and equipment on vessels.
  • Monitor and analyze vessel performance data, recommending improvements to enhance operational efficiency.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong understanding of marine engineering principles, including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and materials science.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and other engineering tools for designing marine systems and structures.
  • Experience with propulsion systems, engines, and mechanical systems used in marine vessels.
  • Familiarity with maritime safety regulations, classification societies, and environmental standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience overseeing marine engineering projects from concept to completion.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with teams and presenting technical information.
  • Experience in conducting sea trials and performance evaluations of marine vessels and systems.

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Advanced degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related field.
  • Experience with offshore engineering projects, including oil rigs and renewable energy installations.
  • Familiarity with alternative marine propulsion technologies, such as LNG, hydrogen fuel cells, or electric propulsion.
  • Certification from relevant maritime organizations, such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent.
  • Experience in working with shipyards, marine contractors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Knowledge of corrosion prevention, material fatigue, and other factors affecting marine equipment longevity.
